<intro>
Defensive tackle Fred Robbins, a key member of the Giants defense the last six years, has left New York to sign a three-year contract with the St. Louis Rams.

Robbins, who will turn 33 later this month, was a leader of the defense in 2007 when the Giants won Super Bowl XLIV. Though injuries have slowed him the last two years, Robbins recorded 25 of his 28.5 career sacks with Big Blue.

The 6-4, 325-pound lineman completed a six-year, $20 deal with the Giants and became a free agent. He previously had played four years with the Vikings.

“I can’t thank all of the New York Giants fans enough for the support that they’ve shown me over the years, and now I look forward to hopefully helping to bring a Super Bowl victory to the fans of St. Louis,” Robbins said.

He adds size and versatility to the Rams’ defensive line with his ability to play both the 3-technique and nose-tackle positions. He will play for his former defensive coordinator with the Giants, Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Robbins was a second-round draft pick by Minnesota in 2000 out of Wake Forest. Personal website: www.fredrobbins98.com.
</intro>

    <intro>
Rumors have been swirling now for months that the St Louis Rams would be one of the top teams in trying to work a trade for Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

There is a connection between the two teams as Rams General Manager Billy Devaney was the assistant G.M. in Atlanta while Vick was the Falcons quarterback. This is a wonder in itself because Devaney is still thinking about acquiring Vick even based on that experience.

Of course there is always the fact that the Rams have no quarterback options written in stone at this point. They are expected to release quarterback Marc Bulger because of his salary and signing Vick would let them take one of the two premier defensive tackles with the first overall pick in the upcoming draft.

Another problem is the uncertainty of the Rams ownership right now. Potential owner Shahid Khan does not have any control over the team yet, so it might be a good idea Devaney to make sure that Khan would be agreeable to the idea of Vick coming to St. Louis. If Khan does not like the idea, then it might not be smart to bring him to St. Louis.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Eagles have already goner through the initial shock wave of bringing in the reformed dogfighter and giving him a second chance, so that public relations nightmare would never happen. Vick would not have to go through the scrutiny he did prior to his time with the Eagles and he might just put some fans in the stands. And maybe help them win a few games too.
</intro>

    <intro>
It has been reported that St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger has cleaned out his locker at Rams Park.

Bulger, 33, is due an $8.5 million salary in 2010 and anticipates being released shortly from the team. The Rams will probably not even try to trade Bulger because of the unlikelihood any team would be interested in picking up his large salary. They figure that it would be too time consuming just to get a sixth or seventh round draft pick in return in a trade.

Bulger's formal release from the Rams is expected to happen soon.

<u2:p></u2:p>Khan, 55, the president of Flex-N-Gate Corp., an auto parts manufacturer based in Urbana, Ill., reports say that he will purchase the 60 percent of the Rams which is currently owned by Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez who inherited the franchise from their late mother, Georgia Frontiere.

Khan started working for Flex-N-Gate in 1970 and has owned the company since 1980. He is a Rams fan who has attended home games at the Edward Jones Dome and he is committed to keeping the team in St. Louis, according to reports.

Rosenbloom and Rodriguez, who took control of the Rams when Frontiere died in 2008, considered several bids for the company, including one from a group headed by St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts.

Stan Kroenke owns the remaining 40 percent of the Rams and held the right of first refusal to purchase the team.

    <intro>
St. Louis Rams backup quarterback Kyle Boller got engaged to controversial former beauty queen Carrie Prejean in her hometown of San Diego over the Super Bowl weekend.

Prejean is the ex-Miss California USA who was stripped of her crown over her controversial comments regarding same-sex marriage. Prejean claimed that her religious beliefs were diametrically opposed to same-sex marriages. She stated that she believed only in marriage between a man and a woman.

Since then, Prejean was let go by the Miss USA pageant, had a solo sex-tape emerge and wrote a tell-all book. She also made several television appearances, including a notorious visit to 'Larry King Live', where she threatened to walk off.

Boller appeared in seven games for the Rams during the 2009 season filling in for the injured Marc Bulger. Boller is a former first round pick of the Baltimore Ravens and still holds the Ravens' team record for pass attempts 1,311), completions (746) and yardage (7,846).
</intro>

    <intro>
On Friday, Kurt Warner retired.

It was expected once Warner called for a press conference. You do not schedule a press conference just to say that things are going to continue the way they have been.

Warner still had one year left on his contract. He obviously still could play. Just last year, he was in the Superbowl with the Cardinals and almost led them to victory, if not for a last minute drive by the Steelers. Warner would have been the first quarterback to win with two different franchises. This year, the Steelers missed the playoffs. But the Cardinals made it back, and beat the Green Bay Packers in the highest scoring game in NFL playoff history. But the Cardinals went into New Orleans and lost in the divisional round.

Still, Warner brought credibility to two franchises that never had it. The Cardinals, who should still be the name of a football team in St. Louis, never made it to the Superbowl before Warner led them to the big game. Funny, Warner used to play for the other team from St. Louis, another team that was not very good before, and certainly has not been very good lately. This may explain why some Rams fans still rooted for Warner when he was with the Cardinals, the team that deserted him. And it also might be because it is just hard to root against Warner. He is everyman. He did not get drafted, and at one point, he was working stocking shelves in the grocery. He played arena football. He never gave up on the dream.

Warner won a Superbowl against the Titans when the Tennessee drive was stopped. New England beat the Rams on a last minute field goal. Pittsburgh ended Arizona's hopes. Warner could have had three wins, and also could have had zero. Interestingly, it seems the defense made the difference in all three games, Warner was not on the field during the deciding moments in those games. Still, it is clear that he was a leader and a winner, and can make quite a case for the Hall of Fame.
</intro>

    <intro>
Steven Jackson, the starting running back for the St. Louis Rams, has been accused of beating up his girlfriend in the ninth month of her pregnancy with his child.

The alleged event actually took place back in March of 2009 when the Rams star got physical with his girlfriend at the time, Supriya Harris, who has filed a complaint with the Las Vegas Police Department.

In her complaint, Harris says, "Steven became enraged and pushed me to the ground, repeatedly. He forcibly grabbed my arm and flung me against the door. I was crying and trying to protect my stomach from the blows, as I was 9 months pregnant. He continued to shove me against the door until his nephew interceded and yelled, 'uncle, she has a baby, stop.'"

Harris also claims that she was "bleeding heavily" from the wounds that she received after she was smashed into a door handle.

Harris says that after the incident that Jackson took her to a nearby hospital, but told her to lie and tell the doctors that she was injured from a fall in the shower.

Ten days after the alleged incident, Harris gave birth to their son. According to the complaint, Harris claims that she broke up with Jackson 4 months later after he threatened to beat her up again while they were at a music festival in New Orleans.

Most recently, Jackson and Harris have been arguing over child support payments, and most recently Harris decided to file documents with the court and pleading with the judge to force Jackson to pay up. That case is still pending.

Jackson has not commented on the charge as of yet and Harris declined to comment on the matter.

St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo released the following statement:

"We are aware of the situation involving Steven Jackson. We are in the process of gathering information. We are always concerned with issues involving our players."
<intro>
Just over Two years since the death of former Rams owner Georgia Frontiere, her two children are finalizing a decision regarding their options when it comes to the franchise.

At this point and time, Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez have four options which they are mulling over and are contemplating.

According to sources they are looking at three purchase offers, or they could decide to keep the team that had the worst record in the NFL this past season with a 1-15 record.

A decision could possibly be reached prior to the NFL draft in late April with the hope to avoid any uncertainty concerning the team and where it is headed going into the 2010 season.

All three offers, described as "acceptable" by the sources, in the range of the total value of the franchise of $720 million to $800 million, and is comparable to what the Pittsburgh Steelers recently sold for.

Only Dave Checketts, owner of the NHL's St. Louis Blues, has entered the only known bid for the team. The people behind the other two potential ownership groups have not been announced publicly as of yet.

Rosenbloom and Rodriguez own 60 percent of the team. Stan Kroenke, who gained his wealth by marrying into the family of the Wal-Mart owners, owns the other 40 percent of the team.

News right now is that only the 60 percent of the team owned by Rosenbloom and Rodriguez are up for sale.

However, Kroenke cannot be ruled out as a potential buyer either as he holds an option to match any offer that Rosenbloom and Rodriguez accept. To finalize such a deal however, because of NFL rules that limit owners of other pro sports franchises to the same market in which the NFL team is located, Kroenke would have to sell the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and/or the NBA's Denver Nuggets, or attempt to persuade 24 other owners to overlook these rules.

However, If Kroenke says that he is not interested in purchasing the remaining 60 percent of the team and is on board with any sale decision by Rosenbloom and Rodriguez, an agreement with a buyer could be signed relatively quickly.

Confidentiality agreements between the Rams and potential bidders have led to very little public news about the potential sale of the team, which has been in St. Louis since 1995. One of the few exceptions came in October when word leaked out that controversial radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh had joined a group of investors headed by Checketts to purchase the franchise.

The outcry from both inside and outside of the NFL was so strong against Limbaugh being involved that he was dropped from the group all together.

A sale would end 60 years of NFL ownership by the Rosenbloom/Frontiere families. At one point, Carroll Rosenbloom owned the Baltimore Colts and he actually made an even trade with Robert Irsay for the Rams. After Rosenbloom drowned while swimming in the ocean, which has been investigated as a mob hit, his wife Georgia, inherited the franchise.

Estate taxes resulting from the death of Frontiere are the main reason why there is pressure to sell the team. By 2014, Rosenbloom and Rodriguez must start paying on the principal of those estate taxes rather than just the interest, and that increased payment would seriously cut into the team's profits.

Despite the favorable lease arrangement at the Edward Jones Dome, where the Rams currently play, they are in the bottom fourth of the league's 32 teams in terms of making a profit.

Even if the team is sold to a group that is not interested in keeping the team in St. Louis, the soonest the Rams could get out of the lease for the Edward Jones Dome is after the 2014 season.
</intro>

    <intro>
Rush Limbaugh has a long history of making negative comments on anyone and everyone who is not part of his immediate Republican circle.

A few years ago he made a comment about Donovan McNabb while working for ESPN. He stated that McNabb was overrated as a player because of the media supposedly wanting to see a black quarterback succeed. While everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, I hardly think that Mr. Limbaugh is in a position to assess the skill set of an athlete.

He has also been recently quoted as stating the National Football League was starting to look like a fight between the Crips and the Bloods without any weapons. So it was interesting news to say the least when I heard that he was part of a group that was interested in buying the St. Louis Rams franchise.

This potential bid for the team has bought on several reactions from the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and even some players around the league as well who said they would not be willing to play for a team owned by Limbaugh.

While I have had more exposure to Limbaugh than I care to mention, I wanted to dig a bit deeper to see some of the comments that he’s made over the years in regards to people he doesn’t particularly care for (minorities, women, Muslims and the list goes on). Here are few quotes from Mr. Limbaugh that I found highly offensive to say the least.

"Slavery was a good thing and that the streets were safer after dark because of it."

"Martin Luther King’s assassin (James Ray), deserves a posthumous medal of honor. We miss you, James. Godspeed"

"How pictures of wanted criminals often resemble Jesse Jackson"

It was difficult to believe that anyone could find something positive to say about any race being demeaned for so many years or give praise to a person who confessed to shooting Martin Luther King, someone who tried to make a difference in the world through non-violent methods. What I also think is interesting is that he has had nothing good to say about African Americans but yet is willing to enter into an arena where a majority of the rosters are comprised of African Americans.

However, no matter how offensive his remarks may be or how much controversy they generate, should this prevent him from possibly purchasing a sports franchise? The answer is no, it should not. I never have been a fan of his remarks or how he seems to think that he’s better than everyone else. Despite his low regard for others, the bottom line is Mr. Limbaugh is more then within in his right to purchase a team just like anyone else.
</intro>

Just when I thought you heard it all I read an article defending Rush Limbaugh to purchase the Rams. First, I must congratulate the people at player press for using it as a feature article, brilliant business move. You couldn’t have picked a better one to begin controversial chatter. That, I am assuming, is what it was all about. Like any controversial movie are book some things have arterial motives. You don’t have to believe or supports your ideas, just make it controversial, to create dialogue, to sell the product.

What’s wrong with the likes of a Rush Limbaugh owning a NFL franchise? We really don’t have the time to dive into that list. The major problem is the very audacity that anything is right about it.

I know that I am coming from a different angle that some reading this could never conceive other then from an outside observation. You also have to understand or realize that with all the divisive ideology, separate thinking, and less then intelligent commentary, we are still seeing the-in his mind anyway-politically correct Limbaugh. Imaging what he is saying to his inner circle.

The same mentality it requires to accept the sheer concept of Rush Limbaugh entering a league that has overcome many deep seeded mentalities, hardly needs to take a step back. So those who truly have deceived themselves into thinking that an extreme right winged self righteous idiot is harmless is not a new mind set.

That way of thinking is the same mental lack of balance that also thought slavery was fine and the American way, and that separate but “equal” really works. I was never naive enough to think that sports was somehow raciest free. Yet I am so grateful I was raised with morals, I would not vote for a Limbaugh owned franchise no more then for anyone who thinks it’s ok to insult any ethnic group.
</intro>

    <intro>
If Rush Limbaugh wants to own a professional franchise let him go to the UFL where no one will notice that one of the biggest race baitors is leading a franchise. Since it will soon be defunct, I say hell let him have the entire league.

For years minority professional athletes have been asking to be treated fairly and respected for the contributions they have made on and off the field. They have been asking for years to remembered when it comes to coaching and ownership opportunities when their playing careers are done. They make up such a large precentage of professional population in the four biggest sports in the U.S. and many have admitted they cannot have winning programs without these same minority players. Baseball once had a racist past and many of their members who espoused racist views are in the hall of fame and no one thinks to remove them because of their beliefs but rewarded them for what they did on the field. Though we have moved years beyond those days the numbers of minority coaches in major division one college sports has lagged regardless of legislation or rules passed to make them a part of the search process in replacing a coach that has left a program/team. Now you are asking players to consider allowing a man who makes much of his money degrading minorities and has stated that he hopes the first black/mixed race president this country has ever had fails. If President Obama fails the country fails. While Limbaugh has not said he wants the country to fail because if it does then who will come out to watch any team he might be the owner of play. I cannot imagine now that there are many fans who come out now to support the St. Louis Rams who look like they will be the next team to lose 16 games in a season. For any minority athlete I would consider it a slap in the face to let this man who once told a black caller to his show to "take the bone out of his nose" own a professional franchise.

I am a Chicago Cubs fan and I remember when there was a huge buzz about Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban possibly purchasing the Cubs. It was said he would be a black mark on the sport of baseball with his flamboyant ways and that other owners in baseball would not aloow that to happen. I could not imagine that NFL owners would allow Rush Limbaugh to own an NFL team especially after his remarks that the liberal media wants a black quarterback to succeed. If a man whose only flaw is that he is free with his money and feels that it allows him to yell at referees during games is too divisive to own a baseball franchise what makes you think it would be a good idea to let Rush Limbaugh own any professional franchise?

If not for black players there would be not professional leagues. As it stands most players in the NHL are from Canada and Russia. Take a god look at hockey and realize what the other major sports would look like if minority players decide they would not play. Considering that they are basically regarded as not intelligent enough to be in positions of power as it was once believed that they were not smart enough to even play quarterback. I agree this is the land of opportunity but someone once told me that people can think you are a fool until you open your moth and prove them right. Guess what Rush, you opened your mouth one too many times and it has come back to bite you. Stick to politics and pills and leave sports to those who at least keep their bigotry behind closed doors.
</intro>

    <intro>
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell so strongly believes in protecting the league’s integrity that he gave himself power beyond state and national laws to determine the fate of the players in the league, even without a verdict.

If Goodell is to truly stand behind his ideal, then he should lead the front to prevent a group led by Dave Checketts and Rush Limbaugh to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

It was made public this week that Checketts, current owner of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues, and Limbaugh, a conservative talk radio host, are joining forces to purchase 60 percent of the Rams from team owner and chairman Chip Rosenbloom and his sister Lucia Rodriguez.

The Checketts-Limbaugh group isn’t alone, as there may be up to a dozen other groups interested in buying the Rams. Checketts and Limbaugh are the only group to express their interest publicly.

If Checketts and Limbaugh are potential buyers, they’d have to gain the approval of Rosenbloom and Rodriguez to sell their majority to them. After the Rams’ ownership’s blessing, Checketts-Limbaugh must be approved by the NFL owners by a three-fourths majority, which is 24 out of 32 votes.

If Goodell truly has the integrity of the league in mind, he won’t allow a group that has an association with Rush Limbaugh to own an NFL franchise.

In a sport where the demographics of the league is two-thirds African-American, having Limbaugh involved with a team on any level could lead to a racially divisive situation.

Rush Limbaugh’s relationship with African Americans is already volatile. They hate the ultra-conservative right wing political critic because they believe Limbaugh is a bigot. There’s no hard evidence or statistics to prove the belief, but they reached the conclusion based on numerous statements made by Limbaugh that lead to the strong assumption.

There might not be a stronger indictment of Limbaugh than during his brief job as a commentator on ESPN’s NFL Countdown in 2003. When the analysts were discussing the high level of play by Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb, one of a few black quarterbacks in the league at the time, Limbaugh said:

I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve.

Limbaugh already had a reputation based on word of mouth. But this opinion was made on national television to millions of football fans, many that are minorities.

The ESPN array of analysts was in disbelief when they heard Limbaugh. Tom Jackson, a former linebacker, was so stunned by the comment, he was frozen in place. Days later, Limbaugh resigned, likely forced out by ESPN, as the other option was to be fired by the network.

One slip of the tongue doesn’t define an individual. Talk radio host Don Imus recovered from his “nappy-headed hoes” joke because he quickly apologized profusely for saying it. Limbaugh said the comment was directed at the media and not McNabb, but he didn’t apologize. Later on his radio show, Limbaugh said, “All this has become the tempest that it is because I must have been right about something.”

Not being remorseful for his ESPN statement puts Limbaugh in a dark light with African-Americans. That, along with his reputation makes it hard for Rush to recover from. But for those familiar with Limbaugh, they’ve already made up their mind about him:

I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.

You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.

Take that bone out of your nose and call me back (to an African American female caller).

While none of these statements definitively say Limbaugh is a bigot, where there’s smoke, there’s fire many conclude.

Limbaugh might actually be a good owner if he gets the chance. But as a controversial figure with a history of turning off a substantial portion of the fan population, a reaction to Limbaugh as co-owner is very possible.

Fans could rally to boycott the team, others could switch allegiance, and prominent organizations could organize protests. It could also affect the team on the field as many free agents might refuse to sign with a team that has Limbaugh in the front office.

The Checketts-Limbaugh group will gain favor from many because they want to keep the Rams in St. Louis. But accepting Checketts-Limbaugh into the ownership circle puts a pock mark on the league. It would be a mistake to allow the Checketts-Limbaugh group to become NFL owners as they could drag down the Rams because of Limbaugh’s reputation.

Protecting the league’s integrity starts with Goodell. Whether he uses his influence to sway owners or he makes the decision to reject all offers from Checketts and Limbaugh, regardless of how lucrative, Goodell needs to do what’s in the best interest of the NFL. There could be consequences to welcoming Checketts and Limbaugh to the ownership fraternity.

If Goodell believes Limbaugh qualifies to be an NFL owner, he should take a hard look at Limbaugh and ask himself an important question:

Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

Is this someone you want owning one of the league’s teams?

</intro>

    <intro>
Week 2 in the NFC West had three games. The Seahawks and 49ers met in a divisional match for an early division lead. The Cardinals traveled to Jacksonville and the Rams were the Rams.

San Francisco 23 Seattle 10

Week 1 featured divisional play in the NFC West. The 49ers beat the Cardinals while the Seahawks shut out the Rams. Week 2's schedule had the winners of those games facing off in an early match up for a divisional lead. The 49ers were the dynasty of the 80's. MCHomer has written about their return to prominence. On Sunday, Seattle Quarterback Matt Hasselback was injured in the second quarter. The former BC Eagle was taken to the hospital, but the x-rays came back negative.

Arizona Cardinals 31 Jacksonville 17

I still think that it's funny that we call them the Arizona Cardinals. I mean, we don't mix up the Indianapolis Colts with the Baltimore Colts. And nobody under the age of 50 says New York Football Giants. But I digress. There was an interesting moment on the FOX pregame before the 1 PM games when Jimmy Johnson said that you could stick a fork in the Cardinals because they were done. I am not sure how someone can make such a judgment after just one week, but clearly the cure to Arizona's 0-1 start was a trip to play the Jaguars. Kurt Warner went 24 for 26 for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns. Playerpress also offers a player blog from Cardinal defender Bryant McFadden.

Mark your calendars, on November 1 the Rams will play in Detroit in the Toilet Bowl, 2009. The loser of that game will possibly get the first pick in the 2010 draft, as that might be the only chance for either team to win this year. Remember how I chastised Johnson for writing off a season after one week? I think you can write off the Lions and Rams after two. Highlights for the Rams this week include the fact that they did score some points this week. In fact, they scored a touchdown, and they did not give up a touchdown to Washington. However, the Redskins had three field goals to win 9-7. The way things went for the Rams can be summed up in the play of Donnie Avery. He had a blocking penalty during a big play in the first half, a fumble in the second half, and dropped a pass in the final two minutes. The Rams clock management was also to blame, they were out of timeouts at 9:25 in the 4th.

Looking ahead to week 3

The Cardinals host the Colts on Sunday Night football (hometowns not required).

Seattle hosts Chicago.

San Francisco goes to Minnesota.

Green Bay has a bye week. Oops, I mean they play the Rams.

    <intro>
What a bad time to retire.

On the day Atlanta released Michael Vick and the continuing What Will Brett Favre Do saga took another turn as a Minnesota delegation personally visits with the waffling quarterback, Trent Green decided to hang it up.

This proves a 15-year career can come to an end without making a sound because the networks are buzzing around the sexier, more controversial stories.

So has been the career of Trent Green, a good quarterback that won’t get the credit he deserves for a career that often turned against him.

Though he was drafted by San Diego in 1993, Green never saw the field until four years later. Green’s chance came with Washington when he performed well off the bench for the Redskins. No one can imagine Green was Gus Ferrotte’s back-up at the time.

Trent turned the relief performance (3,441 yards 23 touchdowns and eleven interceptions) with the ‘Skins into a rich free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams. The financial reward was nice, but he was finally entering a season as the starting quarterback.

And all signs pointed to a breakout 1999 season for Green and the Rams. In two preseason games the Rams offense looked explosive under Trent’s direction. It was the beginning of the Greatest Show on Turf and Green was going to be the ringmaster.

But then Green was mauled by a lion in the third preseason game. Precisely, it was hard-charging Rodney Harrison from the San Diego Chargers on a blitz that changed the course of Green’s career. Harrison landed a direct hit on Trent’s left knee as he released a pass. The hit shredded Green’s knee and he was placed on injured reserve.

In his place stepped Kurt Warner, a no-name from NFL Europe and former supermarket stock boy. Warner challenged the record books as he led the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory and was named league MVP.

Green did get a ring for being on the team, but how valuable is it to him? That’s like claiming the checkered flag when all you did was start the car.

Trent eventually played eight games for the Rams in 2000 when Warner was hurt. Green proved his 1999 preseason wasn’t a fluke by throwing 16 touchdowns against just five interceptions. That led to Green being traded to Kansas City and the opportunity to start that had eluded him for several years.

Finally, Green had an offense and the unit immediately caught fire. With running back Pries Holmes behind him and tight end Tony Gonzalez the primary target, Green and the Chiefs gained over 5,000 yards. While they didn’t immediately turn K.C. around in 2001, Green and the Chiefs put the AFC on notice.

Meanwhile, the Rams made a second trip to the Super Bowl, another reminder of what could had been. Green had his Chiefs, but would Trent be a two-time Super Bowl Champion if his knee was never destroyed? We will never know.

What the league did find out was Trent Green was a damn good quarterback. Between 2002-05 Green passed for 72 touchdowns against 52 interceptions, averaging over 4,000 yards per season. Twice he was selected to the Pro Bowl (he deserved more, but with the likes of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in the AFC, that leaves just one spot left for 13 other starting quarterbacks to fight over).

Green also led the Chiefs to the playoffs. Both times K.C was shown the door by Indianapolis, a 2003 38-31 divisional shootout and a 2006 23-8 humbling at the hands of the eventual Super Bowl Champions.

Maybe Green’s career would had continued at the pace he set in Kansas City, but concussions did him in. The first one was against Cincinnati in 2006 that cost him half his season. A year later, while playing for the Miami Dolphins, Green took a knee to the helmet as he tried to block a Houston Texan defensive lineman during a reverse. Adding insult to injury was Travis Johnson standing over an unconscious Green and taunting him. To top it off, Johnson took verbal shots at Green after the game, and said Green’s block attempt was malicious.

St. Louis’ native son returned home for one more year in 2008 to be Marc Bulger’s back-up. It’s not the way to go full circle in one’s career, but for the man born in St. Louis got to retire in his home city.

Green will turn his attention to a career in broadcasting. He was sharp as a guest analyst in several appearances and his productive career could help him land a job with a prominent network. But the job probably won’t be with NBC, as they added former coach Tony Dungy and Harrison, the man that changed the course of Green career, to their studio team. How ironic.

If we learned anything about Green, it’s to not count him out. He bounced back from a shredded knee and concussions people felt he should had retired from years ago.

Instead good guy Green quietly exits when Vick is monitored by an ankle bracelet and t.v. cameras and Favre basks in the glow of competing coverage of his possible second un-retirement.

For being a heck of a player, Green’s career should be celebrated, even though the press barely acknowledged it.
